Error Message: System Password File is Missing

This error occurs when the password file is deleted or damaged, or when you copy ACCPAC Plus programs to a new directory, but do not also copy the password file, which is a hidden file. The system password file must be present in the Windowing System Manager directory even if you do not use passwords.

There are two methods you can use to solve the problem. You can create a new password file as described in Method A, below, or you can use the DOS ATTRIB command, described in Method B, to "unhide" the password file so that you can copy it to another location:

Method A: Create a new password file

Take these steps to create the password file so that you can start ACCPAC Plus.

  1. Exit ACCPAC Plus and return to the DOS prompt.
  2. Place the Windowing System Manager System 1 diskette into the diskette drive (usually A: or B:).
  3. Switch to the directory which contains your ACCPAC Plus Windowing System Manager program files (usually C:\ASP).
  4. Create the password file as follows:

If you do not use passwords with your ACCPAC Plus system, type:

d:systempw

d is the letter of your diskette drive. You see the following message:

Application password security turned off.

If you use passwords with your ACCPAC Plus system, type:

d:systempw password

d is the letter of your diskette drive and password is the system password you use. You see the following message:

System password updated.

Method B: Use the DOS ATTRIB command to copy the password file to a new directory

Note: These instructions use a command that is available in DOS 3.2 or a later version. If you are running a pre-3.2 version of DOS, consult your DOS manual to find out which command to use.

  1. Exit ACCPAC Plus and return to the DOS prompt.
  2. Switch to the directory in which you originally installed the ACCPAC Plus Windowing System Manager program files, usually C:\ASP (do not switch to the directory to which you later copied the system).
  3. At the DOS prompt (in the directory in which you originally installed the ACCPAC Plus Windowing System Manager program files), type:

attrib

You see a list of the files in the directory. Check that the file syprsc.sys is included in the list.

  1. Type:

attrib -h syprsc.sys

This command "unhides" the password file so that you can copy it to another directory.

  1. Copy the file to the directory where you copied the other Windowing System Manager program files, as follows:

copy syprsc.sys d:/directory name

d is the letter of the drive and directory name is the directory to which you copied the other Windowing System Manager program files.

  1. Hide the system password file again by typing (at the DOS prompt in the directory to which you copied your Windowing System Manager program files):

attrib +h syprsc.sys

You will now be able to start ACCPAC Plus.
